'Sensual Tales' ~ at least I did not pay for this

'kannou mukashibanashi' (官能昔話) drama CDs are described - by the narrator himself - as 'slightly adult tales'. yeah, slightly
on one hand, the XXX scenes - even if present - are not described in detail, but only mentioned to have happened, so the tales remain relatively decent
on the other hand, scenes which are supposed to be pretty normal turn into something absolutely indescribable
I have only tried to listen to the 8th volume which is princess-themed and contains 'slightly strange' versions of Swan Lake by Morikawa Toshiyuki, Snow White by Masuda Toshiki, Cinderella by Okamo-san and Thumbelina by all the cast. and here is something to think over
why was the prince from 'Cinderella' so eager to assault the poor girl both times they met as if he drank too much viagra?
why did Snow White's stepmother turn into a handsome young guy instead of an old granny selling apples?
why was not Odette replaced with Odile, but Siegfried replaced with Lotbard - who of course did not hesitate to whisper a few hints into what they will do with Odette?
why was the servant sent to kill Snow White in the forest so 'ambiguous' describing his 'sharp knife' with which he was to 'cut her neck'?
why was Cinderella's godmother Fairy made into a male one?
and the last question - can you imagine the Beetle from 'Thumbelina' in the I'm-sexy-and-I-know-it mode?
the first two were tolerable but the Beetle made me laugh so hard I had to cover my mouth with my hand, hide under the blanket and do my best not to utter any sounds since 'twas 4 in the morning
do you understand? a Beetle uttering phrases like 'relax... you do not need to be that tense... can you feel... my vibrations...' 
from what I get by reading different reviews and opinions, the Japanese word 'eroi' (エロい) has already been established firmly in the vocabulary of otome-games and drama CD lovers
so, we have like... eroi prince, eroi evil magician, and... eroi beetle

these all tales are nothing in comparison with Inoue Kazuhiko explaining how to wear ear/headphones. at least I did not pay any money for this... I am not particularly happy when the process of plugging earphones into my ears is obviously related to... erm... well... check yourself if you are not afraid

but you know, the last monologue by Inoue-storyteller was a speech of encouragement. 'whatever may happen in your life, if you believe in yourself, then you will be able to become happy...' he said. if you have nobody else to say something like this, maybe even a slightly adult style will do?

how do you know your level of obsession with some particular artwork? by the number of tabs with the same website opened at the same time when that website is supposed to have the next issue/release/chapter/episode/etc
I mean, I can have two to four tabs with raw-hunters or mangafox opened you know. when I wait for KWMS

the more I think about this, the worse the situation seems to me. if raw LaLa #05 2013 is not uploaded somewhere in the next several hours 'tis not likely I will do any exam preparations today...

I must seem a very strange person

there are many people who write passionate comments on manga they have read
there are a few people who allow themselves to write some criticism
there are lots of people who start shouting that those who came to criticise must shut up, or in better cases - 'keep that to themselves'
and finally there is me, who is often so thankful to - guess who? people from line #2
luckily I have friends whom we agree with when discussing some topics, but that does not work all the time. those people who write about their dissatisfaction with some artwork truly save me when I need to find someone like-minded with me. and I actually do not mind them even if I like the artwork discussed. and if the criticism is witty, I can even laugh together with the author
I was wondering why, while fans have the right to write laudatory odes, panegyrics and eulogies as much as they want, only those who are opposed must be considerate, polite and respecting other points of view?
in other words, may I go and yell at everyone who praises works I dislike?

IMHO. Kaichou wa Maidsama ch 81 ~ everything has to change, everything is gone

Momoe Yamaguchi has a great song called 'omoide no mirage' - 'a mirage of memories'
it has the following line - 'everything has to change, everything is gone'
how timely 'tis that I recalled some of her songs, including this one, when I read the 81st chapter of KWMS
the greatest disappointment in any long manga would be when the last chapters turn into a completely different story from what it was in the beginning. 'tis what happened with RuroKen. though the additional 'Hanami' chapter was an example of a perfect happy ending - with all the main characters gathering together, and the only one unable to come sending a letter, so that the reader understands that they live in peace and happiness. and I would be extremely happy to see this, if not for the third arc, where Misao was left behind, Kaoru was expelled from the main team and turned into the usual 'princess awaiting for her knight to come and save her', and the male characters were suddenly granted something verging on a superpower
moreover, I was absolutely unhappy with what happened with the mangaka's art, and I still prefer his immature style in the first several volumes
from then on, I developed an easy way to determine whether the manga is 'drained' or not. you just need to compare the beginning with the latest chapters. in terms of art, Fujiwara-sensei has surely progressed, though I would agree that the best art was somewhere in the middle of the manga. in terms of the story, everything goes smoothly and naturally. then, why did I have that awful feeling of despair after reading the chapter?
even though Misaki is still the usual determined, active, demanding leader, shouting when she has and feeling awkward when something happens, there is a great change in her. unlike, probably, many people, I prefer characters like Misaki stay unchanged. others may call such changes an 'improvement'. I call them - giving in to the environment. and Misaki choosing jurisprudence as her future field of study and work only because it gives her a prestigious, respectable position in the society, Misaki thinking whether she would become an official so that she would have a stable job - this was almost a fail
what saved the chapter from a complete disaster was Usui's position - as usual, he reminded Misaki that she need not burden herself with what she does not want to do, and that she can choose anything she wants because she can do anything she addresses. if not for this part of the chapter, I would be very sad, and I would feel betrayed by Fujiwara-sensei. however, by the last several pages she returned things to what they have always used to be - overdoing, concerned, hard-working Misaki and Usui, making her slow down a little
after I reread the chapter once more, I calmed down a little. as for now, the main line is still preserved and the characters' axes are not ruined. I hope it will never happen during the following several chapters

fans often say there are many things that could be depicted in the manga. at first I was not paying attention to such comments, but these days I cannot help thinking about all the possible events, arcs, happenings that will never be drawn. there are lots of questions already existing, and there are a lot of things that might appear here or there. none of them will be explained. I have to give up. and this is a difficult thing for a LII/INTj with Intuition of possibilities as the second strong function

'Maid-sama' 80th chapter is published. I feel like 'ei... eightieth chapter already?' When I think of it, I have come this far!
In 2005 the first chapter was born as a non-serialised story, then in 2006 it was made into a serial one, and in a blink of an eye 7 years have passed.
My first serial story, my first comics, the first making of a drama CD and the first making of an anime based on it, all of this was a precious experience to me which I am thankful for, and at last even a poster was made - I was able to see all these daring challenges.
Thanks to this work, I was able to participate in autograph sessions both in Japan and abroad, and this 7-year-long experience is not something I can describe simply.
However, every work has to be finished sometime.
And so, starting from the next issue is the last arch!
As for me, I have been drawing this manga aiming for the end for several years... and last year, I could finally see the definite time of the end of this work.
Even if the author himself moves forward in a fumbling way without seeing what is further, when the characters start acting according to their own intentions, I feel I am dictated by those characters.
I feel like all of the characters have their own habits, and there are both times when one can sympathise with and disagree with their respective thoughts and beliefs, their way of life, so I want to go on drawing them so that they could live in their own way until the end, and I would be truly happy if you supported me until the end.
Until the end, keeping the 'Maid-sama' style!
I want to keep doing my best!
So, in the next issue there will be more coloured pages published!
I am hoping to rely on your support!

'Yasuo Otsuka's joy in motion' ~ drawing well and understanding are connected. are understanding makes one feel good

this is going to be a collection of ideas I liked greatly while watching the film. some may look pretty simple and Captain Obvious, but I was moved by them so much

about creating anime:
  • The more serious you play it, the funnier it gets.
  • Genuine realism doesn't suit animation. Ultimately, animation is about convincing the audience. Realism doesn't have to be real. What you want is constructed realism.
  • Don't we need a social message in this?
about artists:
  • They observe everything, even when they're not working.
about drawing:
  • He drew what he felt.
  • Crude but lively is better than polished and static.
about computers:
  • Your uniqueness will come through no matter what tool you use.
about final products:
  • Today there are lots of skilled artists. But animation with warmth and impact is hard to find.
  • We Japanese hurry to get things finished. Japanese animation is mass production now. If you use pans and tricks, characters don't need to move. Films are developed from comics. If the comic is popular, audiences will see the film. People will come for the voices and the story. I always believed they came for the quality of the animation. 
  • It's the age of mass-produced entertainment. Some entertainment is very slick, but it's empty. Some of it was made without any attention to detail. But I hope you'll be discriminating consumer. I hope you'll choose entertainment that has wisdom and passion.

watched Yasuo Otsuka drawing Goemon. astonished. reassured.

people choose different idols and different people whom they consider examples to follow. commercially successful, famous throughout the world creators of big companies, researchers, professors, other celebrities, 'chosen' ones. their quotations are written all over the web, in communities, groups, on personal pages and in profiles
mostly they teach us how to live, tell us what to do. I am already tired of reading those 'wise' advices. at first the trend was interesting, now 'tis nothing else than boring
I personally prefer listening to those whom I trust and admire myself, not hear rumours about someone or something. I could call them 'sensei' - a convenient Japanese word, something between 'teacher', 'tutor', and simply 'man worthy of respect'
somehow, a short video from Yasuo Otsuka calms me down much more than a thousand of empty words I read in other sources
this is the speed-up version which only makes one envious of the animator's ability to draw so perfectly
however, watching the full version was really not a waste of time
'you need to imagine it. you can watch a real person, too, but you certainly need to imagine how it is going to be'
'is it good or no good? you won't understand until you draw. ...no one has confidence. when you draw, only then for the first time you realise - 'oh, this is good', or 'this does not go well'. you can also ask the opinion of other people. ...you do not notice it yourself. you do not, because you are absorbed in drawing.'
'even young people can study this. studying is also a talent. studying, working hard... this is one kind of talent. not all can do it. they have so many things to do - watching TV, playing games...'

'Monsters' dorama ~ everything is relative

it started on a cloudy day in Tokyo when I was returning from Kiriya-sama's First Concert in Aoyama Theatre. a tall building on the other side of the road had a huge banner with Yamasisa (see p. s.) which was a fact worthy of mentioning to my friends so I took a picture of it. since then I had the intention to watch it. the description was promising, too

plot and characters
actually I was sure this dorama must be based on some work, some ranobe, for example. to my surprise, it turned out 'tis not. I mean, the plot was complicated enough and interesting, though not a masterpiece of the genre due to many details holding onto each other on a hair
one must understand, however, that the plot is not the most important thing when we have Yamapi and Katori-san with their respective kinds of charisma
the very first several minutes fully expose the character of the future episodes, the kind of relationship that will exist between the two, their manners, their roles, and the fact that 'Monsters' is a splendid typical Japanese comedy - if you know what to laugh at, you will be able to laugh a lot
so I watched a splendid typical Japanese comedy. or not
something is wrong in this description that I made after watching the beginning..... oh. this is not entirely a comedy, huh?
I spotted this in the very first episode and gradually became more and more sure I was not wrong. the brilliant, talented detective Hiratsuka who was always able to solve the difficult cases and find the true criminal, was always... smiling. always pleased with how he dealt with the case. he did not look really like an angry defender of justice who wants to find the guilty and look him in the face, or a serious career policeman to whom solving a case would bring promotion or higher salary, he was not even an indifferent genius to whom the very process of racking his brains in order to find the truth was a need. he was smiling while explaining the criminals how the crime was really conducted. was it a genuine smile? was it his mannerism?

music
I found the sounds accompanying the episodes actually a bit annoying, but in general the music was pretty good for a dorama. theme song performed by the two lead actors called 'Monsters' too was actually written by them as well. though in the end 'tis nothing more than one more Jpop song which did not go far from SMAP and NEWS and particularly Yamapi's style

visual aspect
and I liked the decorative elements too. I felt like there was some style in it...

conclusion

there was one very important thing in this dorama. and for some reason I cannot explain well it did not look like a mere director's trick to me. I liked a lot the idea expressed by Saionji, who in the end became a detective himself and got everything he would want - a job, a stable position and salary, a wife...

Mr. Hiratsuka, who was heartlessly shaking the criminals' hearts and driving them into a corner, and I, who was simply watching this from aside... What exactly are we?'

Yamashita, due to a very funny slip of the tongue of my friend +Марина Калугина - I only feel sorry for those whose languages do not allow to create affectionate diminutive word forms like we do in Russian, because 'yamasisa' gradually developed into something absolutely untranslatable... if I ever tried to render, would it be something like 'yamasissy'? o___O

translation. 'My Fair Lady' production announcement ~ or something like this 'tis called. methinks...

Waiting for the next chapter of KwMs to appear right now or a few hours later - oh okay, I will wait for one more day... or two... - tonikaku! It was very hard, for some reason. So, for a few days before and right after the release I was absolutely absent from 'this day and age' (c)
Now that I have reread it several dozens of times, and even thought of translating it into English (ooops I said it), my mind is finally determined and strong-willed (mind? strong-willed?). KwMs will be eventually translated by those who undertook this mission, and Kiriya-sama's news won't - because this mission is undertaken by me, huh?
'thas been almost a month since the musical presentation was held, and I am posting this translation only now - because I was lazy and unwilling to do anything - so this post must have lost its topicality as of now. also, due to the same laziness I did not translate the comments of other actors than former Takarazuka ladies

‘My Fair Lady’ is known as the first among the Broadway musicals to be played by Japanese in the Japanese language. Since the first performance in 1963, actresses representing their respective eras have been playing the leading part in this musical, and now it has reached its 50th anniversary and is being reborn with new cast and direction. The starring actresses Hiromu Kiriya and Sei Matobu, together with Yasufumi Terawaki, Ryosei Tayama, Takashi Matsuo and Kyoko Enami attended the conference on the production announcement, held on Feb. 21.
The setting is the Downtown London. Eliza, a flower girl, meets Higgins, a linguist, under unusual circumstances, and begins to learn proper speech and manners. Eventually Eliza completely turns into a lady, but she realises she is nothing more than an object of experiment to the professor, and leaves his side…
Hiromu Kiriya and Sei Matobu, who play the leading part, are both former Top Stars of Takarazuka Revue. Kiriya accepted the offer while in the middle of her last performance before retirement, and said she needed 3 month to decide whether to act or not, commenting: ‘I like this play a lot. However, as I was always focusing on Higgins (in the movie, so as to study male role playing), I still find it a little difficult to change myself to Eliza (laughs).' Also, she expressed her enthusiasm: ‘Rehearsing more and more, I want to create a musical that everyone will enjoy.’ In contrast to her, Sei Matobu, who after graduation from the Revue was feeling like having done with musicals, spoke with deep emotions: ‘While I had the image that this is a great play, I had a vague feeling of wanting to act in ‘My Fair Lady’. Now I feel when you wish for something, it can really come true.’
Though he was not present at the conference, G2, who was working with the new translation, adaptation and direction, conveyed his comment full of ardour of challenging the famous work: ‘We were aiming not at a remake, but at a ‘rebirth’ of this play which would paint Eliza’s role as more “life-sized”, would appeal more to the modern Japanese people, penetrate their hearts more.’

When the role of Eliza was announced I received a big reaction from those who surrounded me, and I realised once again that this play is truly loved by everyone. While being constantly staged respectfully, ‘My Fair Lady’ has reached its 50th anniversary. The musical is being reborn now, but I am also starting a new career after I graduated from Takarazuka last year. With the energy of this play, which is being reborn, I want to act in my way… The words I have received put a lot of pressure on me (from the presenter: ‘Eliza, who turns into a lovely lady from a flower girl in Downtown’), but I sincerely want to show how Eliza becomes a lady from being a flower girl, and to deliver an enjoyable performance with all the honourable members (of the cast).

While I have a feeling of happiness of being able to play in a new version of ‘My Fair Lady’ in the year when the 50th anniversary of the musical must be celebrated, I also feel the weight of importance of this fact. However, I am sure that when it comes to musicals, both the cast members and the audience who come to see us can enjoy their time with a light-hearted feeling, and it was the same during my being in Takarazuka. I hope you will look forward to seeing this performance, as I truly want to create a new ‘My Fair Lady’ together with the new cast, with all my might, and enjoying myself, too. When I remember that this play is known by everyone, and that there are a lot of people who have been acting in this musical generation after generation, I understand this performance is unfathomable, and I simply cannot move on… (laughs) but I want to put this aside, and I truly want to act with all my might in the way I can.

黒白~忘れじの水底から~ ~ 365 yen for a few cute phrases by Okamoto

and 200 more for additional scenarios...
well yes I was attracted by Okamoto voicing the main character, but I would not really spend any money on a game if it were simply for this. just the other day I discovered the charm of live2d animation and was interested in how a visual novel would change with this innovation

oh yes it really changed. I would exaggerate if I said it is absolutely different, but the movements of the characters were pretty smooth and realistic. I might get bored very soon with this, but 'tis true that it livens up the atmosphere
unlike the live2d elements, most stills were just... just awful. not all of them, actually, approximately a half of them were good, but some of the most important ones were a huge disappointment. you see, when I look at this
I have the will to play. and when I seee CGs like this
I feel 'twas not in vain. however when I finally arrive at the necessary happy ending and see this...
'tis somehow... disappointing, you know

story and characters
as simple as 'tis necessary for a 'game aimed at young girls'. on the other hand, this is at least more interesting that numerous 'school-life' scenarios
in order not to forget my full recognition of the fact that otome-games are only a profitable way of entertainment, I have the habit of naming my character like this
both Афоня & Марфа names come from one day when me and my friends were fooling around, as always. oh, Marfa - that is, Martha - is the heroine's name, and Afonya - short from Athanasius - is the name of this cute creature
I actually made it through all the routes and 'conquered' all the characters but apart from the main 'prince' I was not interested in anyone so I skipped most of the scenarios... >____< however, they seemed good to me from what I could gain out of my speedy reading

seiyuus
like I said, I started playing for the sake of hearing Okamoto. to be honest, there are only 4 characters so 'tis not a masterpiece with a wide system of relationship or abundance of voices. however, all the 4 were pretty good. I would say at least none of them was trivial

conclusion
not bad for its price. I mean, I I am willing to pay this amount for a game like this. prices of games for PC and PSP scare me! the cheapest for 1,5k yen, usual - 4,5k yen, some 6k or even twice bigger. if I were a gamer and had any interest in the playing process itself I might feel otherwise, but I am a perfectly sober user and I understand completely what are my primary interests. and I am not ready to pay that much for one more opportunity of hearing my favourite seiyuus' voices in roles equally possible to be likeable or not with a few things really depending on me

do you know the meaning of the game's name? 'kokuhaku' is written in katakana. its usual meaning would be 'confession' (of feelings), but the kanji used are 'black' and 'white', which together form the same reading. this refers to the main characters' names - Kurotsuki and Shirotsuki - Black and White Moon. I wonder why the creators named them like this if they are

「同意する」とか、「君のほうが正しい」とか、「君もよくがんばったんじゃないか」とか、そんなことを誰にも言ってもらえない。自分を含めて。それこそが正義だろうね。

when and how did I discover it? probably I was looking through the list of last uploads on jpoposuki... only two weeks before their new album release... I thought I should wait until the release, but I could not resist after hearing three their greatest songs with beautiful PVs

I just could not stop listening to it, and I could not sit still while listening to it, either
however, there were other songs I liked a lot, such as
Antares to hari
sometimes I find monotonous, or a little plaintive songs very attractive. some of them are really my weak point - such as Mylene Farmer's 'effets secondaires' or 'psychiatric', or some Death Note OST background melodies. this song is also very 'dark' and beautiful
Ame (B) and Inner World
they are not among my favourites, but the electro intro reminded me of Daft Punk so much... partly because of the 'instruments' used (intro of Inner World is just like Daft Punk), partly because of usage of non-original melodies (remember the arpeggio which is sometimes mistaken for Toccata and Fuga in 'Aerodynamic'? now listen to 1:55 of Ame!). I feel almost bad for not being acquainted well with electro, so that my knowledge of electro is limited to Daft Punk and only a few other groups, but somehow songs like this make me feel... respect?

'Boys Be' ~ absolutely normal

just a few days ago I watched a movie about Ghibli and heard Toshio Suzuki describe two types of animated films. the first is when the director wants to create something that no one has ever seen - this is Miyazaki. the other is when the director wants to show something we all know well in a new light - this is Takahata
when I think where of these two 'Boys Be' belongs I arrive at only one conclusion - nowhere

plot and characters
the characters are normal high school boys and girls. they attend classes and clubs, go to the seaside in summer, travel to different places, make new friends, meet old ones, pursue their dreams, fall in love, split up, and constantly wonder over the eternal question
since they are boys who are the main characters, the object taking their thoughts is constantly shown in the 'eye catch' - or how do you call the interval separating the two halves of the episode?
the plot is absolutely normal for a 'school' genre series. there are episodes about one of the main characters, or about several of them. the situations are pretty typical, too
oh, and there was a very feeble attempt to create some psychological atmosphere

graphics
is normal for a 2000 anime. most of the time 'tis absolutely lame and crooked
though there are a few good pictures
 especiall unmoving ones within an episode
 or in the ending

seiyuus
were all normal, coped with their roles. no one beyond Hayashibara-sama could grasp my attention

music
was like it used to be normal in 90s - being a bit more expressive than unnoticeable, but not too overwhelming

conclusion
Hayashibara's appearance in the last episode was probably the most enjoyable thing throughout the whole series. apart from that I cannot find even a single thing that would touch the strings of my heart in 'Boys Be'
because 'normal' must also know its limits

only one 'normal' thing in series like this is praiseworthy - songs. Imai Yuka-san was great, Maeda Aki-san was good also

Western musicals, Japanese musicals, nostalgia

my friend's +Зайцев Роман little sister is going to participate in some performance based on 'Cats' and since she is too small to understand everything herself, I was helping to write down how the English words are pronounced. of course simply reading the lyrics is not enough - because words sung are not the same as words spoken - so I had to listen to the original 'Jellicles', 'Mr Mistoffelees' and 'Ad-dressing'
even though I have never watched 'Cats', just seeing a few stage photos from Western performances and noticing ONLY ONCE a promotion photo of a Japanese version - you know those commercial posters hanging from the ceiling in JR trains too, do you not? haha ^.^ - was enough for me to become eager to watch it sometime

and I could not agree more. Paris and New York were already far from what I would wish to see in SW, but this is simply frustrating. reverse harem, a bunch of popular male seiyuus, cute girlish manga by some unknown mangaka. no Fujishima-sensei style. no mecha. no sense of working together. no charm of Showa era. even though the song by Tanaka-sensei is good, it no longer has that special atmosphere one can feel in the original SW
when I see this I feel nothing

translation mistakes collection. or, TMC

I do not think I would exaggerate if I say the main problem in translating from the Japanese language is not complicated grammar or abundance of kanji (after all, you can learn both) but ambiguity. especially when it comes to every day conversations

恥ずかしい...
ahem. the way which seems most useful to me in learning not exactly what to translate, but how - is simply to listen and to pay attention. speaking more generally - getting acquainted with Japanese culture. reading. watching. even though anime/doramas/manga are a part of entertainment, they give a good hint on how to understand Japanese
actually, I have mixed feelings. one of them is the feeling of being fed up with incorrect translations I constantly meet in subtitles and scanlations. the other is telling me that instead of writing this post I could do something more useful and helpful either to me, or to me and other people as well
meseems, I have a very specific inclination to criticising what others do and finding mistakes in what is already done. 'tis my talent. my natural aptitude. haha
maybe sometime in the future I will be able to make something useful out of it? now I can only think of a very simple thing - a collection of mistakes I find
therefore, all posts on this topic will be marked TMC. yeah, I love ordering and reordering and putting in order

some thoughts on KwMs ch 79

Feb. 23. I suddenly realise the next chapter is about to come out
Feb. 24. 'tis not scanned by anyone yet
Feb. 25. Chinese raws are out and people speculate about the meaning of the last pages. succumbing to the rumours I look through the Chinese raws. this is the first and the last time I look at manga pages in a language I do not understand. 'tis also the last time I read any forums with rumours, opinions and speculations
Feb. 26. I remember last month the chapter was uploaded exactly on 26th
Feb. 27. I finally found it on raw-hunters. just one hour to download the huge archive and it will be mine
Feb. 27, evening. as I thought, Fujiwara-sensei did not betray me. the story develops the same as before, and if it does not cultivate this sweetness any longer, then it will be all right in the future as well
Feb. 28. I have reread the chapter several times already. I wonder if I shall do a rough translation myself? since I have been willing to translate just anything for a week now
